Recupero di un casale / Renovations of a countryhouse Castagnola (Gremiasco AL), 2019-22

L’edificio residenziale, su due piani fuori terra, è stato oggetto di un intervento di riqualificazione edilizia ed energetica che ha interessato l’intero involucro, sia interno sia esterno: i fronti esterni sono stati aperti sul giardino trasformando alcune  finestre in porte finestre sui lati est e ovest mentre sulla testata sud est sono state realizzate due nuove porte finestre  che affacciano sul frutteto.   Sulle facciate esterne è stato rimosso l’intonaco cementizio ed è stata lasciata a vista la muratura in pietra, sigillata con intonaco a calce; la rimozione dell’intonaco ha evidenziato alcune  aperture poi tamponate che si è deciso di non ricucire ma di lasciare in evidenza.

The residential building, which has two stories above ground, underwent a renovation and energy-efficiency upgrade that involved the entire building envelope, both interior and exterior: the exterior facades were opened up toward the garden by converting some windows into French doors on the east and west sides, while two new French doors were installed on the southeast end, overlooking the orchard.  On the exterior facades, the cement plaster was removed, exposing the stone masonry, which was sealed with lime plaster; the removal of the plaster revealed several openings that had previously been filled in, which it was decided not to close up but to leave exposed.

Al piano terreno la nuova apertura dà accesso alla terrazza  posta alla quota del pavimento della cucina,  sollevata dalla quota del terreno con una struttura in pali e assi di castagno,   che consente l’accesso da est al piano seminterrato adibito a cantina e  collega la casa  alle diverse quote del terreno circostante.

On the ground floor, the new opening provides access to the terrace, which is at the same level as the kitchen floor—raised above ground level by a structure of chestnut posts and planks—allowing access from the east to the basement, which serves as a wine cellar, and connecting the house to the various levels of the surrounding terrain.

Con poche opere di modifica della distribuzione interna, è stato privilegiato il rapporto della cucina con la campagna e sono stati realizzati i due bagni, avendo cura di conservare i vecchi pavimenti e riutilizzando le vecchie porte della casa integrate con altre porte di recupero.
All’interno, sulle murature perimetrali, è stato realizzato un cappotto termico di 16 cm. in fibra di legno intelaiata e in pannelli di argilla intonacati in argilla e lolla di riso; sono inoltre stati isolati il solaio del piano terra con un massetto a secco in lolla di riso e la copertura con pannelli in fibra di legno.
La casa, ben isolata con il cappotto e i nuovi serramenti , è riscaldata nella stagione invernale con una stufa a legna posizionata in cucina e con un termocamino canalizzato nel locale soggiorno; la prima riscalda la cucina e la camera soprastante tramite una botola apribile, mentre il termocamino riscalda il soggiorno e le due camere soprastanti.

With just a few changes to the interior layout, the focus was placed on the kitchen’s connection to the countryside, and two bathrooms were added, taking care to preserve the original floors and reusing the house’s original doors, which were combined with other salvaged doors.
Inside, on the exterior walls, a 16-cm-thick thermal insulation system was installed, consisting of framed wood fiber and clay panels plastered with a mixture of clay and rice husks; the ground-floor ceiling was also insulated with a dry screed made of rice husks, and the roof was insulated with wood fiber panels.
The house, well insulated with the exterior insulation and new windows and doors, is heated in the winter by a wood-burning stove located in the kitchen and a ducted fireplace in the living room; the stove heats the kitchen and the bedroom above it through an opening hatch, while the ducted fireplace heats the living room and the two bedrooms above it.
