Sopralzo di un complesso residenziale comunale, Cinisello Balsamo (Milano), 2004 – 2007
Tema del progetto è il sopralzo di due edifici di abitazioni popolari comunali costruiti negli anni Ottanta. Demolita la copertura a falde in lamiera, al 9° piano vengono realizzate due serie di case a schiera distribuite a ballatoio e un piccolo edificio ad uso comune. Le nuove case pensili sono costruite in legno e hanno copertura piana trattata a giardino. I tetti verdi permettono di garantire un buon isolamento termico (specie nella stagione estiva) e contemporaneamente aggiungono a ogni alloggio un proprio giardino, posto al decimo piano, sulla sua stessa copertura. I percorsi di distribuzione, il piccolo edificio comune e la sua piazza-giardino, i prati delle coperture e le piccole costruzioni che li popolano (che fungono da capanno per gli attrezzi-locale caldaia, in progetto dotati di pannelli solari, mai messi in opera) vanno a costruire una sorta di micro-ambiente urbano pensile, con vista panoramica sulla metropoli milanese e sulle catene montuose lontane. Il cantiere è stato disastroso, le opere sono state realizzate in modo pietoso. Il senso civico e la capacità inventiva che molti abitanti hanno dimostrato nel prendere possesso delle loro case –seminando e piantumando i giardini pensili lasciati in nuda terra dall’impresa appaltatrice, e aggiungendovi pergolati, tavoli, barbecue- hanno restituito al progetto una parte della sua dignità architettonica.

The object of the project is rooftop housing on two buildings of social housing built in the Eighties. Having demolished the sloping roof in sheet metal, two series of terraced houses were built on the 9th floor arranged with balcony access and a small building for communal use. The new houses are built in wood and have a flat roof in the form of a garden.The green roofs guarantee good thermal insulation (especially in the summer) and at the same time add to each apartment a private garden, on the tenth floor, on its own roof. The access routes, the small communal building and its piazza-garden, the roof lawns and the small constructions on them (which function as garden shed-boiler room, with solar panels in the project which were never installed) create a sort of rooftop urban micro-environment, with a panoramic view of the Milanese metropolis and the distant mountains. The building site was disastrous, the work was performed pitifully. The civic sense and capacity for invention that many occupiers demonstrated in taking possession of their houses – sowing and planting the rooftop gardens left as bare earth by the contractors, and adding pergolas, tables, barbecues – restored a part of the project’s architectural dignity.
